As a hairstylist, you have a number of responsibilities—after all, your clients trust you to help them look and feel their best. Give your clients great haircuts every time using the following haircutting tips:

Communicate with Your Client

Upon first meeting your client, it’s important to establish a relationship built on communication and trust. Greet your client in a friendly manner and ask what she would like to achieve with the haircut. By being listening intently, you’ll make your client feel more comfortable. Before starting the haircut, repeat your client’s preferences back to her, so you are sure you are both on the same page. Show her how much length you plan on cutting off using your finger or your comb.

Consider the Type of Hair

The texture of your client’s hair will play a role in determining the final result of the haircut. Run your fingers through your client’s hair to assess its texture and health before beginning the haircut. Fine hair tends to look flat, but you can create volume using layers. People with coarse, thick hair can also benefit from layers that alleviate heaviness.

Consider the Face Shape

After meeting your client, take a moment to look at her physical attributes. The haircut you provide your client tremendously impacts how others perceive her face shape. Consider whether your client has a square, oval, or heart-shaped face. Suggest a few flattering haircuts or angles to your client in order to enhance her natural beauty.

Provide Realistic Expectations

Most importantly, providing your client with a great haircut involves creating realistic expectations. If your client walks into your salon with a photo of a haircut that won’t flatter her face shape, be honest with her, and suggest similar haircuts with more flattering attributes in order to satisfy your customer’s desires. Your client will ultimately appreciate your honesty, especially after she receives a haircut that she loves!
